Photography Workshop

with Chris Steele-Perkins

If you are a working professional photographer, or a perfectly adequate amateur photographer, but you feel you want to go further with your work: make it more focussed, personal, or in simple terms - better - then this workshop aims to help you.
Now, before I sound like a snake-oil salesman I want to be clear, it is you who will make yourselves better and I will give you some tools, some ideas and some hard work to move you in that direction. You have got to have the motivation, improvements don’t come easily, and you are going to have to follow on long after the workshop is over. Without your full engagement I can’t help you; there is no magic potion. The workshop will begin with a review of a selection of photographs presented by each participating photographer and this will be subject to my and the groups’ critique, and there will also be a discussion of the work they wish to undertake over the period of the workshop. The idea is to identify some of your strengths and weaknesses and start a process of people trying to better understand for themselves what is they are doing. Participants will be asked to approach a photographic story in Mannheim and its surrounding area, either relating to previous works or interests, or exploring an opportunity to start something new. Participants should have thought in advance about the kind of project they would like to work on and there is no limit other than practical ones as to the type of project they wish to follow. Each day the participants will go out photographing and the process of editing and criticising the work produced will be an important part of the learning process that will be conducted on a daily basis by myself and all participants, as they will be learning from me and from each other too. Their new work will be reviewed, re-focused as needs be, tasks set, developments suggested, and they will be sent out to take more photographs. The most important way of getting better is by doing. The environment of the workshop will be conducive to an intimate, creative atmosphere. The location of the workshop in Mannheim is Kulturbrücken, a cultural off-space in Mannheim in a very interesting quarter of the city “Jungbusch”, easily accessible by bus or train from Mannheim train station. At the end of the workshop each participant will have a portfolio of the work produced during the 5 days with me. This will also be integrated into a group presentation “Mannheim Stories” consisting of each photographer’s work. It is not a long time, but things can change, and as I said, this will be the first steps, then it is up to you to carry on. Learn more

Exhibition

Japan Suite

This exhibition of 20 works, filleted from Magnum photographer Chris Steele-Perkins’s extensive images of Japan, has a perfection that could almost be Japanese – if the pictures didn’t mostly cast doubt on that clichéd view of the place. Yes, Mount Fuji is here, but it’s viewed across a glowing filigree of factory pipes that echoes and mocks the lacework of branches that traditionally frame the mountain. There’s one of those here, too: it looks faked. Of a trio of geishas, one appears cross, another vacant and the third is absorbed with adjusting her obi [sash]. So much for their supposed unwavering focus on men.1

Documentary Fuji

Mount Fuji, a mountain that has since ancient times been treated as an object of worship, a famous mountain landscape and as artistic inspiration. It's also the most photographed mountain in the world and many Fuji have been created. This exhibition presents Ukiyo-e as a documentary of the Edo Period and features works from 2 series of the Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji made by the meisho (famous places) artist Utagawa Hiroshige in his late years, as well as 40 Views of Mt. Fuji by the Ukiyo-e enchanted English photographer Chris Steele-Perkins.
